Family fun from science to gardening

The Springs Preserve is looking to hold several events, promising fun for the whole family this summer.

Spring Garden Series: Herbs

  • Saturday, June 8: 9 a.m.
  • Fresh herbs are the “chef’s kiss!” Learn how to grow and cultivate a variety of herbs at home from the gardening experts at the Springs Preserve. The specialty class is the third in a series focused on desert climate gardening. Cost: $15 for nonmembers; $10 for members. Reservations are required; seating is limited. DRI Science at the Springs–The Story of Extremes

  • Thursday, June 13: 6-8 p.m.
  • This thought-provoking science lecture delves into the realm of extremes. Explore the impacts and dynamics of extreme heat, flash flooding and atmospheric rivers. Decipher the mechanisms driving these phenomena and their far-reaching consequences on our environment and society. Discover the science behind these extreme occurrences and gain a deeper understanding of how they shape our world. The Story of Extremes is part of the DRI Science at the Springs—a multimedia, science storytelling series that explores environmental research, personal narratives and climate solutions. Free Class: Basics of Performing a Home Water Audit

  • Saturday, June 1: 9 a.m.-noon
  • It can be difficult to know where you’re using the most water. Are you irrigating your landscape correctly? Do you have a leak at your home? In this free class, experts from the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) walk you through a home water audit, providing basic tools to answer these questions. The class is free, but registration is required. Seating is limited. Register at springspreserve.org.

Free Class: Drip Irrigation

  • Saturday, June 15: 9 a.m.-noon
  • Get the help you need to make your landscape desert-friendly and your irrigation system more water-efficient. This free class is taught by experts from the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) in partnership with the Springs Preserve. Learn the skills to design and install a drip-irrigation system, including how to select and assemble components. You’ll build a drip system model right in the classroom. The class is free, but registration is required. Seating is limited. Register at springspreserve.org.

SPECIAL EVENTS—PREVIOUS MONTH

Nuwu Pahsats Speaker Series

  • Saturday, May 11: 4-6 p.m.
  • The Nuwu Pahsats (Southern Paiute Garden) Speaker Series provides a space for Indigenous Knowledge Givers to share their cultural lifeways and experiences with the greater community. Emphasizing sustainable relationships with water, plants and the landscape, the speaker series creates an opportunity for collaborative, community-based learning. This event features Reagan Wytsalucy, Natural Resources and 4-H Extension Assistant Professor for San Juan County, Utah State University Extension, who will speak on the topic, “Getting Back to Our Roots: Revitalizing traditional farming practices in San Juan County, Utah.” The event is free, but registration is required. Springs Safari: Paleontology

  • Saturdays & Sundays in June: 11 a.m.
  • Go on a paleontology safari and learn about fossils, what a paleontologist is, and how studying fossils helps uncover the dino-riffic secrets of the past. Free for members or included with general admission.

Conservation for Kids: Fossils

  • Saturdays & Sundays in June: 1 p.m.
  • Want to discover the secrets of ancient creatures? You can do that and more as you dive into the world of fossils and learn how to protect and preserve our planet’s past and future. Free for members or included with general admission.

Nature Exchange Badge Class: Hydrology

  • Saturdays & Sundays in June: 2 p.m.
  • Take a deep dive into the water cycle while learning more about how water moves, how humans harness its power, and what you can do to conserve it! Free for members or included with general admission.

Toddler Time Kids’ Activity

  • Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays: 11 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Bring your little ones to the Springs Preserve for kid-friendly fun with a new theme every week! Recommended for ages 5 and under. Free for members or included with general admission.

Drop-in Demonstrations

  • Thursday-Monday: Check onsite for details
  • Learn more about Springs Preserve and the natural world with free and fun activities throughout the property. Meet with experts who share information on a variety of subjects ranging from Archaeology, Gardens, Zoology and more! Free for members or with general admission.

Ride the Train

  • Thursday-Monday: Schedule is subject to change based on weather and availability
  • Jump aboard the Boomtown Express, a guided, narrated ride on a life-size locomotive. The train stops at Boomtown 1905, a recreated streetscape of early-1900s downtown Las Vegas. Free for members or includes general admission.

WaterWorks Museum

  • Thursday-Monday: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • WaterWorks Museum is an interactive, behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of water treatment and delivery in Southern Nevada. Learn about the challenges and triumphs of the journey of water. The exhibit, located in the Charleston Heights Pumping Station, is presented by the Las Vegas Valley Water District, Southern Nevada Water Authority, and Springs Preserve, in partnership with ONE DROP™, with contributions from the RBC Blue Water Project and Springs Preserve Foundation. Free for members or included with general admission.

Boomtown 1905

  • Thursday-Monday: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Step back in time at Boomtown 1905, a recreated early Las Vegas streetscape. Explore historical re-creations of the original train depot, Arizona Club, Majestic Theatre, First State Bank, Lincoln Hotel, and Las Vegas Mercantile. Encounter interpretive, interactive exhibits and period décor to learn about early-1900s Las Vegas. Free for members or included with general admission.

Springs Café

  • Thursday-Monday: 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • The Springs Café offers exceptional sammiches, salads, brunch, burgers and libations at the Springs Preserve. Made from fresh, healthy ingredients, menu items include vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.
